The reasons for migration are pertinent for the normative evaluation and justification of rights, depending on countries of origin and individual objectives. Some reasons generate explicit obligations on the part of the receiving country while others result in no legitimate claims at all. At the Kick-off event in Essen the current state of research concerning migration was assessed, as well as the ethical philosophy perspective expanded by central questions and insights from the social sciences. The event started with a lecture by Veit Bader (Amsterdam) on the different dilemmas of transnational migration.
